EXPANDING WORLDS
BEYOND SPORTS
OUR MISSION
NEW YORK SQUARE is a pioneering private enterprise created to foster and advance sustainable infrastructure focused on clean water, health and well-being, quality education and gender equality. Using sports and entertainment as its vehicle, New York Square’s transformative journey begins in Africa, soon to expand throughout the world.
BOREHOLES
“Water is the best gift you can give to a community in need.”
Although access to fresh clean water – an essential element for our health and well-being – is something that we all take for granted, it is still in short supply in much of Africa. It is estimated that one million boreholes – round holes drilled down to the subsurface where groundwater is located – are needed to supply clean drinking water to the Continent’s increasing population. New York Square is therefore committed to drilling boreholes adjacent to each community court developed.
NEW YORK SQUARE’s first borehole was drilled on January 8, 2024 in Tamale in Ghana’s Northern Region to a depth of approximately 80 feet, some 230 miles from the border with Burkina Faso and 390 miles from the Capital, Accra. The borehole will provide fresh clean drinking water to approximately 15,000 local residents.
The Opportunity
NEW YORK SQUARE is harnessing the power of sports and entertainment as tools for positive change. This visionary initiative shall provide the necessary infrastructure and support, guidance, and mentorship necessary for the world’s underprivileged youth to reach their full potential and achieve their life’s dreams. Beginning its efforts in multiple locations throughout Africa, the Caribbean and United States, New York Square shall transcend geographical boundaries, leaving an enduring mark on local communities and the global stage.
Nine years ago this month New York Square’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Dan Isaacs, first arrived in Africa, stepping foot on Ghanaian soil on January 17, 2015. Quickly enamored by the Ghanaian people and recognizing that Africa was the future, he never looked back. In 2017 he brought Africa’s only authentic New York City Pizza, selling American Exceptionalism one slice at a time on his one-of-a-kind pizza truck, Slice of America, featuring Famous Familgia, New York’s favorite pizza,
Recognizing the synergy between pizza and sports (Famous Familgia was the official pizza for both Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium) Dan first sponsored a local boxer, Isaac Dogboe, who would later win the WBO junior-featherweight title. Dan also recognized that basketball would soon take center stage in Africa, well before the Basketball Africa League was announced (in 2019), and began laying the groundwork for New York Square to become synonymous with sports and entertainment in Africa.
Initially, New York Square has intentionally focused on basketball and tennis, with baseball on deck. Basketball has emerged as one of Africa’s most prominent and is the fastest growing sport on the Continent. This surge in interest is fueled by the global success of over 50 NBA players hailing from Africa and a burgeoning middle class with increasing disposable income.
Despite its proficiency in sports like soccer and boxing, Ghana, with a population of 32 million, 40% of whom are under 15 years of age, holds the distinction of being the largest African country population-wise that has yet to qualify for an international basketball tournament. Working in partnership, New York Square and the GBBA are rapidly transforming Ghana into Africa’s center court for basketball.
Uganda, with a population of 52 million, has but a single indoor sports court in the entire country. Notwithstanding its limited resources, the Ugandan National Basketball Men and Women’s teams have consistently placed among the top teams in Africa.
Tennis in Africa can best be described as nascent, with a lack of resources, infrastructure and coaching. Working in partnership with the GTF, New York Square shall renovate the Ghana National Sports College Tennis Center in Winneba, located 40 miles from Accra, creating Africa’s premier tennis academy. Constructed approximately 20 years ago by the International Tennis Federation, it boasts eight outdoor hard courts, numerous hostel units and auxiliary facilities but has fallen into a state of disrepair. Working with Kamau Murray, who is a WTA Gold Coach and runner-up for 2018 WTA Coach of the Year and, only the 3rd African American to coach a pro to a Grand Slam Title, guiding coached Sloane Stephens to the US Open title in 2017.
